The History of Haglofs

In 1914, Wiktor began his first low-scale production in a farmhand’s cabin, Drängstugan, on his family’s farm. On his bicycle and on foot, Wiktor began to sell his backpacks to the neighboring farmers, forestry workers and school children. Early records from Wiktor’s own sales manual show that his first product was actually a school pack: “No 6. Backpack without outer pocket, with leather lined flap. Bluish grey or brown waterproof fabric. Size 33x35 cm. Price per doz. 10.80 SEK. Price per piece: 0.90 SEK (Fabric No 3677).”

In 1916, Wiktor knew he was on the right track and registered his firm, “W. Haglöf, Ryggsäcksfabrik, Torsång.” Gradually, the enterprise grew. Wiktor’s backpacks gained in popularity, and his sales area expanded.

In 1935, he opened a new factory that gave him more room to focus on his ingenuity. In the late 1940’s, Haglöfs started naming their products on a more regular basis as the assortment grew. Many of the names formed associations with nature or outdoor activities – a tradition the company still carries forward today. Many of the characteristics found in a modern Haglöfs product originate from the values on which Wiktor Haglöf based his company from its inception. Superior quality, great attention to choice of material and robust constructions with high durability were core values back then, as they are today.
